My answer to the new OGL
Bringing about a community lead solution - by the community for the community
So a lot of us who have been creating things for D&D have been left high and dry by a company based on their greed. That much is clear as they lie to us and try to make it almost impossible to cancel our subscriptions to show them our disdain for what they are doing. I have never really been one to be able to just sit still and not do anything. I love our community of creators that I have had the honor of being a part of. Each project has brought me into contact with amazingly talented and imaginative individuals who have helped teach me and made me a better creator. Everyone is so passionate because we loved the system and wanted to make it better, more diverse, and ever-expanding as new people joined us. Now, however it is time to turn our eyes elsewhere for that.
By the Community For the Community
After discussing things with friends in the creator community and with my fiance about the risks, moving fully away from D&D was not enough. We wanted to fully support our community if we could and keep the rug from ever being pulled out from under us again. With the announcement from Paizo on the ORC it just all slotted into place in my head. A setting agnostic system and resource library under the ORC license that is made by the community for the community. It would be a website with the resource library and PDF of the game for free, with the option of buying a book to support the project. The resource library would be evolving in that anyone that used it could add as much or as little to it for the community to also expand on in their own games. If you make a 200 page book and only want to submit a single magic item to it? Do it. If you make a 20 page book and want to include all of it? Submit it. We will also keep an optional [meaning opt in per item] directory of all the items created with the system that links directly to wherever you are selling it. This project would never touch your IP or your money, operating on optional submissions and donations.
Next Steps
What does this mean? I have already started work on banging out an outline and ideas. Once it gets in a good spot I’ll be bringing more community voices into it to add to it from the start and make it as diverse and inclusive as possible. You will probably even see fundraising or a Kickstarter as we try and knock out our checklist of items:
- Website - directory, creator submission forms, resource library, system PDF and physical book, open system with reference tagging
- System - setting agnostic, diverse, ever-growing and evolving with the community
- Resource Library - searchable, reference tagging, easy to navigate, submittable
- Community Creators - talks about coming in to expand on parts, create the community lead system, the starter resource library items
Now, this is my brain child that I am showing to ya’ll in this early stage because I’m honestly excited about it and would love to hear what you think. If you are interested please drop a comment or reach out to me on social media! We will start working on reaching out to those we can ourselves to get more voices heard on this thing as it moves forward. As always all my love to our community, I can’t express how welcoming you all were to me or how many friends I’ve made creating amazing things. Hopefully, I capture that in this for those who join us in the future.
